The AP Government and Politics: U.S. Test  covers the United States Government and its Politics since the writing of the Constitution through present day. Students are expected to know about various American political beliefs, political parties, interest groups, elections, cultures and mass media. Also, they are expected to know about the three branches of American government and various supporting institutions, and how these various entities and elements co-mingle to bring about the formation of public policy. In addition, the student should have a substantial understanding of Civil Rights and Liberties, in particular, the Judiciary's rulings and impact of the Fourteenth Amendment. 2

The exam is 2 hours and 25 minutes long and includes a 45 minute section of multiple choice questions and a 100 minute free response section that includes four essay questions. 1

This exam is consistently underestimated in terms of it's difficulty as indicated by the percentage (32.1% in '07) of students who achieved a score of 2. It's the highest of any AP test. Also, the test ranks second only to the two AP English tests in terms of the number of students achieving either a 2 or a 3. 2 Clearly test takers need better preparation for this exam.
